Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny (2006) Review

Directed by: Liam Lynch
Produced by: Jack Black, Kyle Gass and Stuart Cornfeld
Starring: Jack Black, Kyle Gass and more.
Genre: Comedy, Rock Musical
Runtime: 94 minutes

This film isn’t particularly liked because of its low-brow humour, but I have a soft spot for this one. It’s hilarious and the music is great. Naturally Jack Black is who boots the points of this film with his energetic performance. Tenacious D is a film that follows KG and JB, two born to be musicians who encounter things from an obsessed fan, to Satan himself. In terms of comedy and music, this film is great, but the story isn’t one of your high original and zestful ideas. The characters are fun, the story is kind of fun too, and as I said the music is great. Tenacious D isn’t a film for everyone, but I say it’s a pretty good film.

Plot:
The story follows brave young Jabels, who is hungry for a rock –excuse the quote from the first song-. The teenage JB escapes from his religious family to pursue his dream in becoming a rock star and next we see him in his middle aged form, still walking around with his guitar. He is walking along the street when he says Kyle Gass (Actual Name) playing on the street. JB is amazed by his ‘talent’ and asks him to teach him his ways. He is rejected but later KG saved JB from a gang and thy go back to his apartment. Next we know they are on the search for The Pick of Destiny, the pick that gives the player ultimate guitar skills. Not the most intricate plot, but enough to entertain.

A tribute to clockwork Orange:
This scene was fantastic. I really enjoyed it. It’s short but they nailed the spoof perfectly. When JB is walking in the dark all alone, he comes to a bench to go to sleep. All of a sudden we have a snippet of music that sounds exactly like something out of ‘A clockwork Orange’, and a gang with all white clothes and masks, like the real gang in the film. Well one of them is like the character Dim in clockwork Orange if you have seen, and is again a very inventive joke. This is a very short scene, and doesn’t play much in the film, but I thought it was spoofed very well.

Berth Marks:
One day when JB and KG are talking about what to name they're band. JB mentions berth mark on his ass saying 'tenac'. KG also has one and it says 'ious D'. They're fan 'Lee' notices their asses together making the name 'Tenacious D'. Very silly but funny.

A great soundtrack that should be appreciated:
The sons are very different from usual rock, and are both rhythm catching and funny. The first song Kickapoo is funny because it meshed JB singing, Dio (The real Dio) and even Meat Loaf (The real Meat Loaf). Next song is Classico, very short and full of profanities, and I guess it is the sort of thing that gives this film bad reputation. Most of the songs are entertaining and very funny.

C**k Push-up:
"A c**k push up is when you lift yourself off the ground with nothing but your boner". A great underestimated, and corny joke. When they are stealing the pick JB has to use his 'c**k' to press a button, and the scene is funny as hell. It's a childish joke, but it's still pretty funny for the boys out there.

Rock off with the Devil:
My favourite scene from the film is the song is Beelzeboss (The Final showdown). The music is great and the lyrics and acting is hilarious.

I'm sure you can guess what's in his hand.

Overview:Tenacious D: Pick Of Destiny isn’t one of those films you will remember for anything like lovable characters or amazing story. It’s just a fun film to watch and laugh at. They aren’t trying too hard to be funny or anything like that which adds to its comedic charm. Overall Tenacious D is a good comedy film full of laughs, but lacking in story if you’re looking for something to get interested in to. It is a good film probably to watch with friends.

My Rating: 6.5/10
