I absolutely love the original karate kid film, and the remake. Heck, I even kind of liked the second and third. Then someone just had to go the extra bit further and make this. Christopher Cain (The Director) should be ashamed of this. It is a mockery to the series and makes a fool out of Mr Miagi. But that's not all. The film just isn't very good at all! I don't blame the director as much as I do to the guy that wrote the garbage, that's right I'm talking about you Mark Lee. The film is desperately dull and uninspired. Over-long and utterly predictable, The Next Karate Kid offers little excitement, even in its culminating fight sequence.
Well the film takes place several years after Miagi (Pat Morita) trained Daniel, I presume. The film opens with Mr Miagi being awarded for his World War Two effort. This scene made me think the movie was going to be okay. It was an okay scene. But I was wrong. Meet Julie Pierce (Hilary Swank), the typical teenager in a sense who sneaks out of her house to see her pet eagle at her school. Julie lives with the grandmother, Louis, and one of the first scenes, it is quite clear what the relationship between them is like. Well it is up to Mr Miagi to take care of this parent-less troubled teenager while grandma is gone and the film just begins to get dumb from there.
I can kind of respect the idea of Mr Miagi training her, and some of the scenes are quite emotional, but overall the film is just dumb. Some of the acting is just silly and the characters are just brainless. Mr Miagi discovers that Julie has done by before when she almost gets hit by a car, but jumps into the tiger position avoiding the car. The film has a very weak and predictable plot, but at least the acting isn't totally flat.
A few of the scenes re-visit how Mr Miagi beats up multiple people with ease. But some of the scenes just make fun of Mr Miagi. There is a scene late in the film where we see Mr Miagi dancing with Julie which was most embarrassing. There are several silly scenes in the film, but I will not spoil the entire film. I really don't have much to say about this one, because it's just stupid. Some of the film I could bare, and the film could have been a little better, but is brought down by the fact that it's trying to revive the karate kid.I don't have many words for this film and I'm not going to bother wasting them. Let's just say to wrap up this one up that it is a terrible plotted, mindless and unnecessary film.
My Rating: 3.5/10
