Puppet Master (1989)

Directed by: David Schmoeller
Genre: Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Mystery & Suspense
Runtime: 90 Minutes

Wow, this truly is one of the worst horror films in cinema. With the most boring and lifeless characters “Puppet Master” is a film that when it is over, you feel cheated of entertainment. It is unbelievably boring right from the beginning. David Schmoeller made a big mistake choosing to direct this film and I heard that he felt he would get more money from putting it to Home video Release than to theatres.  Well I think that was a smart move for him but I doubt anyone was interested in buying this piece of junk. In addition, if they did buy it, I am sure they were disappointed. It is a stupid story, a stupid set-up and has the most idiotic idea for a villain (and villains). It delivers no surprises, no scares and most of all, no fun.

In this tense horror outing Toulon, a puppet maker, discovers an ancient Egyptian potion and uses it to bring his creations to life. Unfortunately, he is a rather twisted fellow and his puppets become murderous little demons who escape. Distraught, the master takes his life. Years later, psychics tune into the existence of the monstrous marionettes and set off to stop them.

The story to begin with is boring from the very first scenes. We meet some of the puppets in their miniature absurdness with the puppet maker who shoots himself. Years later, people try to stop the puppets, and fail. Now, to begin with, these puppets are not even threatening. They are no bigger than 12 inches apiece! The idea that they are able to kill people is idiotic and even though as hard as they tried to make the murdering the puppets were committing make a bit of sense, they failed. For some reason the puppets have muscles as much as an average human, because in the first death, they pick up a poker and whack a woman round the head, which kills her.

The killings in the film are not even imaginative or interesting. We have a female puppet that pukes leeches out of her mouth and a puppet who seems buff, but has this tiny little head. There is barely any gore or violence in the film and for something for 1989; you thought they would have made more of an effort. “Puppet Master” also has a terrible pace, which makes it even more boring. It is 30 minutes before anyone is killed, which would not be a problem, but the death was quick and had the worst kind of dramatic build up. There are barely any surprises in this film. No shocker moments, any thrills, anything that makes you sit completely still, any of the things that make horror films enjoyable.

The concept is absurd, but had such potential. It is as if no one cared about trying to make an exciting film. The acting was unbelievably stale. I mean, these actors were hollow just like the puppets if not more. I find it very hard to believe that this film went on to spawn over seven sequels. I mean that is just ridiculous. Why did they not stop after the second or third? Full of mediocre scares and a plot that will put you to sleep; the film is a complete disaster. “Puppet Master” is a pure abomination to the horror genre!

There really is not anything interesting about this film so skip it.

My Rating: 1.5/10
