Bad Santa (2003)

Directed by Terry Zwigoff
Genre: Comedy
Runtime: 91 Minutes

Prepare for strong language and booze because this is not your typical Christmas movie. Starring Billy Bob Thornton in a role unimaginable with anyone else, “Bad Santa” is a comedy not to be forgotten. With hilarious crude humour and a main character whose life wasteful, and wastes himself, this film is great comedy. Most modern comedies are not very impressive but here it is solid crude strong humour.

Willy (Billy Bob Thornton) is a middle ages low-life who has a life of misery. To top it off he is a mean person who is a sex-aholic and alcoholic. He and his 3 foot 6 inch collaborate (Tony Knox) both work as Santa and elf at supermarkets, but not everything is as it seems. These two pair up to make a duo of conmen who rob the banks at Christmas with no failure. This film follows his miserable life and meeting a strange little boy, who he ends up sympathising for this bully targeting kid called "Therman Merman", which vaguely resembles Christmas spirit along the way.

The dialogue in this film is brilliantly scripted and is full of hilarious black comedy. It may not be for everyone, but it is uproaringly funny film. Thornton is a master at his character, the humour had excellent timing and the crude jokes throughout the film are golden. The story is not your average Christmas movie, but it manages to have a little bit of that spirit in it. the film has some surprisingly touching moments. It is like a low transformation of bad to less-bad as we see Willy sympathising with the snot nosed kid Therman.

Thornton was amazing in the film. I could not imagine anyone else who could do this better than he could. His voice, his facial expressions, what he says, it is all what makes Willy a character you love to hate. Knox was also great here and definitely added to the comedy. The film pushes it “R” rating with all its daring actions, and I am not sure what the cut version is like, but the uncut version has plenty of adult content.

Terry Zwigoff the director of “Ghost World” chose to direct this and what a fine job he done. Definitely, the most adult oriented film he has made, but undoubtedly a good achievement. Directing the kind of humour in this film is not easy, but Zwigoff pulled it off nicely.
Lots of this film can be quoted because so many of the lines are hilarious. To name a few profanity free ones there are “What do you want. A snot Rag?” and “Let me fix you some sandwiches”. After watching this you will probably quote at least one thing from it to a friend or even to yourself in your head.

Even after my third viewing I find this film hilarious, so it has a little bit of re-watch value. Another interesting thing that this film does is how it can still have some dramatic impact. Here we have a middle-aged grouchy waster who sympathises with a weird socially awkward kid. The final moments of the film are great and give the movie the slightest bit of heart. It kind of makes you pity Willy rather than have at some points. So overall, while not being for everybody this is an outrageous comedy filled with swearing, sex, alcohol and plenty of comedy.

My Rating: 7.5/10
