Monkey Business (1931)

Directed by: Norman Z. McLeod
Genre: Comedy
Runtime: 67 Minutes

As the first Marx brothers film I have seen, I am hugely impressed with their comedy. It was witty, clever and the film was almost like gag after gag. Well-co-ordinated and hugely funny, which shows how funny they really are because even after all this time, they are funny. It is similar to Laurel and Hardy, timeless comedy. The gags were great and the four brothers were excellent. Their comedy bounces off one another, which makes things all the funnier. “Monkey Business” is a divine comedy film that will have you either chuckling or in stitches.

Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zippo are on a stowaways on a boat who soon begin to cause havoc around the boat. The film follows their crazy antics and it is nothing more than that.

What I really love about these four comedians is how the comedy bounces all over the place, and with these four characters the gag possibilities are endless. For this film, it truly was g after gag with slapstick along the way and most of the lines said are quotable. The acting was great here and I can see why the Marx brothers are renowned for their comedic talents.

Another thing that I found interesting is each one’s personality. First we have Groucho, the one know the most that seems to be almost like a leader. Then you have Zeppo who is the sort of a flirt with the women and Chico is a little bit of an idiot, who here shows some real stupidity. Then we have Harpo, the mute who ultimately plays as a fool in the film. What I found admirable about him is how he reminds me of Dopey form “snow White and the Seven Dwarves” which must have been some key inspiration. All four of these characters together made excellent comedy that can be either loved or hated. But for me, I love it.

The film is complete mayhem and zany comedy and the four characters bounce comedy off each other in a great way. Every single one of them has great little personalities so it gives them personal comedy. This comical team will definitely bring laughs.

The script was all fine but the story has no proper plot. The set-up is simple, the four of them are stowaways on a boat and eventually after fooling around and getting involved with some things, they get off and do some more stupid things. The story feels a little weak but the comedy makes up for it ultimately. Overall, if you want to have some good vintage and timeless laughs, “Monkey Business” can be funny for almost anyone.

My Rating: 8/10

  2. A Night at the Opera is probably my favorite Marx Brothers movie. It's the one with the classic Stateroom Scene in it.
