The Evil Dead (1981) [Horror Marathon] 3#

Dircted by: Sam Raimi
Genre: Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy
Runtime: 85 Minutes
As a B-Movie, I think this film is ultimately a success. It has plenty of shocking moments and at times, it is very predictable, but for some reason it adds to this film’s excitement. This is the directorial debut of Sam Raimi, who also wrote the film. There is some gore moments and plenty of creative and gross-out visual effects. Raimi knew what he was doing in this inspired horror flick and it will give you a few jumps while also being very gross.

Five 20-something friends are holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead. An archaeologist's tape recording reveals that the ancient text was discovered among the Khandarian ruins of a Sumerian civilization. Playing the taped incantations, the youths unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

There are many B-Movie horrors out there; it may be the most used genre for B-Movies. Some are successful and some are failures. No big names are involved in this film, and this is a directorial debut by Sam Raimi, so it is quite an impressive achievement. Most first films of directors are based on things that have inspired them, and usually grab a few ideas from other films of the kind they are making. Well, here it follows many of the Horror film rules and throws them around creating chaotic mayhem.

There are no Hollywood star names here but everyone does their job fine, even if it times it, feels like corny 80’s cheap acting.  Betsy Baker, Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor and Therisa Tilly are our five and only actors, and excluding Campbell, these are all newbie actors, and a few did not go on to make more films. Betsy Baker, next to Campbell was the best because of her eccentric, spooky and crazy performance as the transformed Linda, in some lines that are undoubtedly memorable. When she sings “We’re gonna get you” that was the moment I knew I would be remembering this films for quite some time.

The effects were astoundingly innovative as a B-Movie and it is the classics 80’s gory gross-out magic. At times, we even had moments of disgusting stop-motion animation, which was crafted extremely well. Many of the effects were disgusting, especially those stop-motion moments. We have blood spurts, white vomiting and limb cutting.

The acting at times was corny, but towards the end, it got reasonably great. The film may be flat in characteristic, but it makes enough for the set-up of the great plot. The plot is simple and it is amazing how the story is so thrilling when there is one location and one location only. It adds to the thrill of the film in the sense of being trapped. This went on to spawn a successful sequel, which at times, is considered even better than this. After seeing this I will definitely be checking it out.

This is definitely not for the faint hearted and that is a warning. With all its icky violence and blood spurting gore, it is something that will have you scared out of your wits, or, just freak you out.    “The Evil Dead” is packed with gory flesh destroying moments and several scares were you know it is coming, but it still makes you jump. Ultimately this is film is B-Movie brilliance that is a great directorial breakthrough and highly entertaining.

My Rating: 8.5/10

  2. Good review. I love this film; a favorite of mine when it comes down to the great genre of horror (which isn't so great anymore by modern standards, but when you look at the older, better stuff; yeah, it was pretty excellent).
