Bruno (2009)

Directed by: Larry Charles
Genre: Comedy, Mokumentary
Country: United Kingdom
Racist, Sexist, Idiotic and unbelievably offensive; Bruno fails to even bring a few laughs to the screen with its mediocre acting, daring reality set-ups and purely stupid plot. In the 80 minutes runtime it has you get extreme nudity, completely unfunny jokes and lots of homosexualism. This is only a problem because of how much of an insult it is to the sexual orientation. Bruno made me laugh for two instances, and even then, it was mild chuckles. Do yourself a favour and avoid this one at all costs.

In simple terms, this is a sexually crude version of Borat that has a homosexual foreigner slapped in. The titular character ventures to America and other parts of the world to try to become famous. His attempts such as getting a foreign baby, trying to get married and even trying to turn himself heterosexual don’t quite work out and he then finally figures out how to become famous. Will he succeed?

Sacha Baron Cohen, known for things like Borat and Ali G in Da House does a horrible job here as the homosexual, eccentric and disturbed Austrian Bruno. His performance was irritating, overly confident and just not funny. There were no more than two instances that made me chuckle. Bruno with his stereotypical accent and downright strange choice of fashion is a character not even to laugh at the stupidity of.

The most annoying thing about the film is how it has basically given the finger to religion, sexuality, filmmaking and morals, in the most irritating fashion. Sure, crude humour is funny at times as immature as it is. Bruno takes a more idiotic approach by including an idiotic protagonist who is highly offensive and throwing in a bunch of unfunny practical joke stunts. It is an interesting approach to try this an experiment, but it failed miserably this time. However, one thing I must credit is Cohen’s bravery. Most of the things that happens in the film is real and being able to act under that pressure (especially if you’re trying to fool a politician or leader), is quite impressive. It may have sucked this time but he definitely has guts.

I seriously do not understand how people can find this film funny. It is not even humorous in the fact it is filled with joke-stunts against celebrities, which is an interesting approach, but as a film, this truly does not work. Bruno is the type of thing you would not even want in a T.V show as a one-off thing, and they would have been better off not making the film. The films represents homosexuals in a horrible way, and it is not even offensive funny. It is offensive in t 'you killed it'.

I cannot say it any simpler; Bruno is a god-awful film. It is an insult to filmmaking and entertainment for that matter. You may find this movie funny (which would confuse me) because of its extremity and daring content, but really, it is not that amusing. If you are easily amused by crude humour and sexual references, this film will probably make you laugh. If not, you are in for a painful experience that will have you wanting to turn the film off.
